Kibera Paper is an ingenious solution that creatively and with an earth friendly approach offers a chance of creative work for the women in the slums of Nairobi. The project started in the Kibera Slum, the largest slum in Nairobi; with 6 women and now has grown to accommodate 24, most of them are widows with very limited resources who live in very precarious conditions and in extreme urban poverty. The project gives these women a chance to engage and collaborate creatively in making handmade cards from waste paper. This secures them an honest wage generated by wasted printed paper which would have otherwise gone to landfill.
Local offices donate waste printed matter and this is pulped down, dyed and dried, and transformed into beautiful handmade paper. The paper is used to create exquisite greetings cards which are designed by in-house artists and made by a growing team of craftspeople.
